This unit is quiet, powerful, and sucks up my German "Shedders" hair in a jiffy. I have three sets of carpeted stairs in my house, and it's so wonderful to whip this light-weight machine out and take care of all three sets of stairs in mere minutes. No power cords, no maneuvering a heavy machine - it's quick and efficient. I was concerned about the battery cutting out after 6/10 minutes, but so far it hasn't been an issue. If anything, it makes me more efficient! No dilly-dallying allowed, I get right to what needs to be vacuumed and find I'm finished long before the battery discharges. This Dyson is expensive, but if you have a pet who sheds like crazy - you'll be very happy to have invested in this machine. Can't wait to try it out in my vehicle.

This unit is quite small -- the brush head is just 3.5" wide. So, if you're planning to vacuum the animal hair from your couch, you'll have to move quickly to finish before the battery dies! And it takes 3.5 hours to recharge!Wouldn't be so bad if the unit came with two batteries and a charger. But, at the moment, you can't even buy a spare battery at [..]!I have a Dyson canister unit that I like a lot, but I cannot recommend this DC-31 "animal" until Dyson ships it with two batteries. 6-10 minutes of cleaning is basically useless and, for the price, insulting.

Alright first, it is pricey, but what really matters is how well does it work? Like other Dysons this is great for people with allergies. It works great, the motorized brush makes a big difference and it will pick up a lot of dirt, hair, etc. Battery life is better than the previous model (DC 16), it would be around the 10/6 minutes claimed. Also an improvement over the previous model, the battery can be disconnected and charged separately. It does not have a wall mount, this isn't a big deal to me, but just be aware if you care. You'll have to decide for yourself if it is worth the cost, but the performance is great, and I have not had any reliability issues with any previous Dyson products.

Terrific machine! Used it on some loop and pile carpet and could hardly believe how well it picked up lint, pet hair and everyday crumbs, paper scraps, etc. The extra 'beater" tool that comes with this model (not included on the DC31 [non-animal] handheld model) did an amazing job vacuuming up cat hair that was well embedded into the mock-fur lining of a cat carrier, and was equally impressive removing cat hair from a fabric covered couch. Did it grab every single strand of pet hair? Of course not. Nevertheless, this vacuum is far superior to any of the other heavy-duty "dust-buster" type handhelds I've used. I find it to be as effective as a high-end upright, only a lot less heavy and bulky. Despite the substantial price tag, the strong performance makes it an excellent value.Unless you need to use it a lot longer than the ten minutes or so you get per charge, I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't be delighted with this handheld. Personally, I got an awful lot of vacuuming done on a single charge, in part because it worked so well I didn't have to go over the same area numerous times. The only minor item that could be improved is the pictorial instruction sheet; it's not terrible, just not as clear as it could be.

At first I was thinking, "What insane person would pay this much money for a hand held vacuum cleaner?" I decided to give it a try thinking that I could always return it and get a refund. I was so pleased with the way it works that I decided to keep it. It truly gets the job done. The suction is very powerful, yet it is relatively quiet and very lightweight! It is small and easy to maneuver into tight spots. The three attachments are easy to put on and take off. They all do their intended job well! The rotating brush attachment actually pulls out the long haired cat fur from my fabric chairs. That in and of itself is miraculous! The duster attachemnt works well for cat hair dust bunnies all over my home. The long narrow crevice piece makes it easy to suck up cob webs in the ceiling corners. I couldn't believe how easy it was to empty the dirt cannister. You don't need to remove it. Just hold the vacuum over a trash can and push a level down to open the door, the dirt falls out and you're done. No bags to replace! My only complaint is that since I use this as a primary cleaning tool (I only have wood floors so I don't usually use a full scale upright vacuum cleaner)I could use a battery that last more than 6 minutes on the highest suction power (it will go 10 minutes on less section power). I don't want the battery going dead when I'm in the middle of a cleaning job. I went on the Dyson website and decided to purchase a second battery so that I can be recharging one as a back-up. It costs approximately $75 plus shipping. The link is [..]I KNOW IT'S EXPENSIVE, but I love having a tool that works so well! I can easily clean my car with it too. It is very portable.

For heavy dusting, nothing beats my lambs wool duster. With the DC31 in my other hand, I don't even have to stop to shake it out. A few quick passes on the nozzle cleans it up and I'm ready to go again. The 10 minute battery is adequate for this use, but just barely. The DC31 is small, quite a bit smaller than I had imagined. The canister is 4" diameter, a little larger and more squat than the 32 oz. Gatorade jug I have in front of me. I had imagined something more the size of a food processor. That perhaps might be just as well. Even the diminutive size is tough on the hand and arm. Its balance point is far forward of the grip, and difficult to use one handed for even the short run time. What I really want is a backpack, wearable battery powered vacuum. Maybe I'll see about reversing a leaf blower to power the vortex dust extractor. In the meantime, the small size and battery convenience makes it easy to not put off the light cleanup jobs to pull out the shop vac or upright later.

UPDATE: 9 Apr 2011. I was asked how I could possibly clean "my entire house" with the Dyson DC31 Handheld Animal Vacuum Cleaner. If you read my review you'll see that I only said that I was cleaning four rooms and _"almost my bedroom & bath on one charge"_. It is possible to do this because (1) my house is a reasonably sized house; (2) I'm not pressing the power button continuously; and (3) in the two last rooms: bedroom & bath, I prep them by using a dry Swiffer to get all the "wool sluts" (original term for "dust bunnies"), from under the bed and to gather the cat litter in my bathroom. From there, I quickly pick up the lines of dust & cat litter in those two rooms. And then, the ultimate joy is to press the red release button so that all the fluff & nonsense falls out of the DC31 & into the trash can. If you make a mistake and pick up an earring or something vital, then you have the ease of releasing the DC31 onto paper and sifting through your mess and picking up your precious goods.I keep my DC31 always plugged in because I use the long, thin attachment tool for cobwebs, grout lines, and other tight corners in my bathroom, dining room, & kitchen (still finding last year's & this year's Xmas-tree needles. I think they breed in direct opposition to the way socks disappear :O)ORIGINAL POSTING:This is my third Dyson Animal (I bought the 1st gen. upright and then I bought the Dyson DC25 Animal Ball, because it's so much easier to maneuver whilst being in a wheelchair). I love them all, but being able to pick up the Dyson DC31 Animal handheld and quickly dust before visitors arrive is just priceless. I have a cat and the Dyson DC31 Animal takes care of all cat-related fur, missed treats, & any stray litter bits. I love the Dyson's power and I'm able to clean my living room, kitchen, dining room, foyer, and almost my bedroom & bath on one charge. The manual recommends cleaning the filter monthly. I thought it was going to be a chore. Ha! Cleaning the filter = "user friendly". No manual needed at all. I popped the unit open and the filter itself has images of a faucet on it. Brilliant!I can't recommend the DC31 Animal handheld highly enough.

After such a great experience owning a DC15 for 5 years, we recently purchased a Dyson DC31 Animal and I've got to say that so far we've been very pleased. Now I've read other posts complaining about charge time and having only 10 min of use per charge, but 3.5 hours is pretty quick and you don't keep it continuously running for the entire time you are cleaning. I put this little guy to the test, because I've never detailed my 2000 truck nor my wife's 1996 car, so they were pretty filthy. I was able to clean the entire king cab, seats and all with charge to spare, starting off with using just the combination tool w/o the brush to pick up the heavy stuff, then finally moving on to using the brush bar. I then started on the car with the combination tool again and had just enough juice left to do a once over on the floor and some crevices. Not too shabby if you ask me, since this is the type of unit you'd use for small jobs. I give it a thumbs up for sure.

I have the Animal upright Dyson and love it, so I decided to buy the hand held now that I am pregnant and I have a harder time dealing with the extension arm of the upright. I tried out all of the attachments and the suction holds as promised and expected from a Dyson. 6-10 minutes seems short, but I have a hard time using the full 10 minutes, because a handheld is for smaller projects and if a job takes longer than that you probably should be using an upright. I cleaned my couch, all the cushions, my bathroom floor, dusted three rooms, and did crumb pick ups and a flight of stairs within the 10 minutes. The only things they could improve is of course giving another battery pack, in case you don't have 3.5 hours to wait for it to charge AND having a wall mount charger instead of just a cord, but those are minor.Another great Dyson product.

We have 2 dogs and I was hoping this vacuum would do the job of cleaning the stairs. The biggest disappointment is that, once fully charged, the power lasts only 6 minutes. I'm not sure if this was written in the description of the product, but I did not see it. In terms of suction, it was just OK, way way too expensive for what it's worth.
