I thought maybe potential purchasers would like to know that the FHV1200 Flex Vac runs for a little over seven minutes continuously before the motor starts to slow down and lose power. (Never run a NiCd powered product completely dead, some of the battery cells will "reverse" and be permanently damaged.) The time to fully recharge after running the vac this long is about 20 hours (figure a full day to keep it simple). The charger is a small wall adapter type.I think the power is very good for a rechargeable vacuum (a little more than your average "dustbuster"). As an example, it will easily suck up cat litter, small pebbles, and potting soil, but will have trouble sucking up a glass marbles or pennies.I don't think mine is too loud. It has that high speed "whine" sound combined with the sound of rushing air, but the combination is somewhat muffled. It definitely doesn't sound weak. It almost sounds like a corded vac.The FHV1200 smaller than you might expect, and the build quality is very good. I'm not normally fond of Black and Decker, but I like this little machine. ...and the blue LED charge light is cool!Minus one star because it takes a looooong time to recharge...

For the price only buy if you plan on using for 5 minutes. Very dissapointed in product for the price. I manage a retail store. Bought the item to clean dust ect. First problem is the filter started to clog and had to clean in first 2-3min. This was normal cleaning. After cleaning filter 2-3 min. latter the vacuum lost battery power. For quick, and I mean quick cleanup be ready to to have on the charger 20 hours and cleaning power of 5-6 minutes. Not worth the $69.99 price.

I had just purchased The most popular brand of these hand vacs a year ago and it turned out to be rather worthless. It may pick up a crumb but that is about it. This is just what I have wanted for years.My need is mostly for getting dog hair off the furniture and not have to drag out the big vac. This is fantastic and comes with a specific pet hair tool. I have a pom so there is a hair issue daily. It also has Nozzle/Brush and Crevice tool.The instructions tell you to charge for 21 hours the first time and that it may take up to 5 times of 21hr charges and complete dispensing of the power for it to reach it's full charge holding time. I have done this 3 times and each time ran it 20 min and it was still not totally done...but I was. LOL. I love the design and it is easy to hold and the tools are on board, but the holder can be removed when in use. It has a 2 year warranty which is wonderful. It is good looking also and takes up little space. You can grap it quickly and clean up a spill. Very each to empty the canaster and it will not turn on if you don't have it closed correct which is a good safety feature.The 4 foot flexable hose is great for reaching and cleaning blinds. You just cannot do all these things with the old fashioned buster kind of vacs.If there were 10 stars this item would get it from me. Just make sure you do the 21hr charge and don't give up on it until you have done it 5 times. I am satisfied at 3 but if I find it not to hold after 5 or go down I'll come back and let you know.

The best Hand Vac I have ever owned. Compact, lightweight and Powerful. Has a Shop Vac like hose that extends to help you clean up high, low and in tight spaces. Also, it has a Pet Brush attachment that is the best solution I have used to clean my dog's shedding hair. Great Buy!

I was so excited to get this product. I thought it was the coolest vacuum ever made, then I opened the box. After waiting for 24 hours for it to charge, I finally got to used it. I once again thought it was the coolest portable vacuum ever made. This lasted for less then 5 minutes. By the time I cleaned the cat hair off of one chair and some cat hair under a couple of tables, it started losing power. IT RAN FOR LESS THAN 5 MINUTES!!! I thought I had a defective product until I began reading the hundreds of reviews that say the same thing. The worst part is that you cannot even plug it in and use it. You cannot use the unit while it is on the charger! 24 hours later, you get five more minutes. For a portable vacuum, this thing is expensive.. IT IS NOT WORTH THE MONEY.. YOU WILL BE EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.. Mine is getting returned..

Bought this product primarily for cleaning the car and small accidents and jobs around the house. The cordless feature is a definite plus when doing the car and quick jobs like vacuuming a hard to reach corner, edging or books/bookcases. It did a nice job of a dusting off a bookcase that hadn't been cleaned in several months, but I found that emptying the dust from the bin was not quite an open and shake operation. A bunch of the dust clumps in the back of the collector bin filter did not empty out until I removed the filters and used a small brush to help it empty out.The vacuum is extremely portable and (for me) has a rather loud whinning motor noise. But I guess this is to be expected with a small vacuum with exposed exhaust. Trumps the dustbuster I previously owned with more suction and a hose feature.

I am a 48 state trucker, and I travel with a truck cat.I have been looking for a decent way to keep the cat hair cleaned off the seats and fabric walls of the truck.While it does take a longtime to charge, and only lasts about 8-10 minutes on a full charge, it doe s a FANTASTIC job of getting the cat fur cleaned up!I have read some of the other reviews on this product, and you have to remember...it is NOT going to perform like a big house vac that is plugged into a wall! For me, this has impressed me and it delivers what it promises. For my wayu of life, it cleans everything I need it to clean in no time.A very good buy in my case, and what I use it for.

I don't often return to review purchases, but I did want to for this, because I did so much research myself.I think this model is exceptional for the class of vacuums that it represents.Recently our household has migrated from a traditional push-vacuum to the combination of a Roomba and a handheld for corner dust bunnies and misc. accumulations. It's a great evolution, my wife and I agree and the good old cannister vac that used to rule the roost is now, itself, collecting dust in the closet.The point here is that the Roomba created a new need for us; a need for a capable, powerful "touch-up vacuum," and I think the Flex has got the position covered.People complain about the short battery life, and it's a legitimate complaint -- but realize that using this thing for much beyond "touch-ups" is like using a weed trimmer to mow your entire yard -- it's missing the point. So, yeah, I wish the battery life was longer, but it's really not a problem, especially if you learn to switch the flex off as you roam from spot to spot. (see extended comment about this at the end of my review)The suction power is excellent, the noise level is fine (it is, after all, a vacuum -- so no it's not silent). The dirt trap is a tad bit wonky, but I can live with it. (We have a lot of pet hair and it tends to get balled up in the dirt container, needing to be pulled out in a massive clump with two finders)Where the Flex really wins is with its wrap-around, uncoiling hose, a feature that I didn't see on any of the competition. This feature RULES THE DAY, making the Flex basically a powerful miniature version of a full-size vacuum. And I tend to use it this very way -- with the motor/base in one hand and the hose/attachment head in the other hand, reaching here and there, up and down, for rogue dust bunnies. Add to that the collection of attachments, and it's the current winner that I know of.One thing (besides battery life) that I'd like to see changed: Dyson is marketing a competing product --the DC16 -- that has a power "trigger" instead of a switch. That concept, I think, is KEY to understanding this new class of product. A power "trigger" would help conserve that precious battery life and that would be nice. (overall, though, I decided the Flex beat the Dyson hands-down, and I still hold that opinion, largely because of the rationale of the hose, [and a longer battery life, apparently])In short, what some might call a portable or hand-held vacuum, I would call a "miniature vacuum." And that is exactly what I was looking for.UPDATE 10/26/2010: I wanted to add a quick note that I am becoming somewhat increasingly anxious over the seemingly shorter-and-shorter battery life of the unit. Is it just me? I may do a test where I just turn it on and let it run down. I love everything else about the vac, but one needs to be judicious and mindful of the short battery life. The biggest downside seems to be the long recharge time. Basically overnight. I wish they would at least offer some sort of battery-replacement program. So far, I've found none.

This would be such a great tool if you had the option to plug it into an outlet for uninterupted power. It takes all day for a full charge and you only have 5-7 minutes to use it before the battery runs out. I vacumed one set of blinds and one curtain and it was done. Not worth the money. However, if you Black and Decker decided to re-design with a power cord; I would re-purchase in a heart beat :)

Before starting, let me say that I've probably owned over two dozen various types of Vacuums in my life. And you have to be realistic in owning one. Stop and think, there is a reason why those that run on electricity will blow a fuse at home (don't try it unless you are very motivated) if you plug in and run on the same circuit an air conditioner along with a vacuum. The good powerful electric vacuums get deep in rugs, etc. and pull in a lot of electricity......something I've yet to see a cordless vacuum do and I doubt it ever do (for over a minute or so) if it ever does.That being said this Vacuum by Black & Decker is VERY GOOD for small jobs. Like hard to reach places where you don't feel like lugging a "regular" vacuum. Say a room where you have to walk around stuff to reach a dusty table or curtain. Or out to the car to do the seats or floor and don't want to fiddle around with plugging in a hand vacuum and not twisting your legs around the cord. It's great for doing your keyboard or small jobs like after snacking on the chair or couch and getting those crumbs. Animal fur stuck on the pillow where Mr. Snuggles likes to sit.....this will do the job. Broken leaves blow in the house and you don't want to bed over picking them up by hand for ten minutes, this will do the job in a few seconds.For a small job where you want to vacuum, but not wheel and lug out the big "job" which will only take a few minutes.The battery works fine. Just plug it in for a good 21 hours. I did mine for 24. Plan ahead, plug it in a few hours before going to bed, then when you wake up it'll be ready. The battery is supposed to last and not overcharge. However it'll be interesting to see how the battery is a year from now.But be realistic, don't expect this to clean the rugs throughout your house. Because it won't.
