I bought a new Kirby last year and it does a great job. It has such powerful suction, you can see it almost lift the carpet off the floor. With the auto drive, it is very easy to push on the carpet. You can do it with one finger. It has an attachment for just about any cleaning job you want, including shampooing your carpets.I guess my biggest complaint is that you need to take off the front part to attach and use the hose. That is really inconvenient when wanting to get at baseboards. You either finish up vacuuming, then change the hose attachment and go around to each room again and do the baseboards. Or you have to change it while in each room and back again.My second complaint is the weight of the machine. It's heavy for a woman to carry up and down stairs, or to use cleaning the mattress.If you don't mind the draw backs, this machine will clean like no other and should last a lifetime with few repairs.

My wife and I have owned this product for two years now, and we wish we had explored other options before committing to this one. We bought the item based on recommendations from a friend (who had owned one for 20 years), but for us, it barely suits our needs:Cons:1. Very heavy. It has a handle to facilitate carrying it up & down stairs, but it is still cumbersome.2. Hose attachment is retarded. Like another review mentioned, you have to take the brush head off to install the hose. This makes cleaning very tedious, and I miss the ease of simply disconnecting a hose to get where the brush head does not fit & continuing on.3. Useless accessories. A big selling point is the shampoo attachment, the bubble maker, sprayer, blower, etc. We have never used them. Changing the oil in my car is easier than installing the shampoo attachment, and when I think about spraying bug spray around the foundation, I get my sprayer, not the vacuum cleaner. The only attachments we frequently use are the traditional vacuum attachments.4. Belts/bags difficult to find/replace. The Kirby store in our area closed a year ago, and it is difficult to find bags and belts (which DO break - we've replaced ours 3 times in 2 years). Changing the bag can be messy. We have a large dog with long hair that fills the bag quickly.5. Big/bulky. Unit is very large, so if you have limited closet/storage space, this may be a factor. Also consider doing the stairs. We have a landing halfway down, and the hose is long enough for us to get all the stairs. If you have straight stairs, you'll have to park the Kirby at the top or bottom and get as far as you can. The unit is too big to fit on the stairs, and it is way too heavy to carry.6. Price. Unit is very expensive for what it does. We could have bought 2-3 Dysons or Orecks or SIX Shark Navigators at the same price. We have still bought 2 other vacuums since then - smaller, cheap models for quick clean-ups, etc. So, the "Last Vacuum You'll Ever Need To Buy" claim has no merit.It certainly has a lot of suction, and after two years, we haven't noticed if it has decreased. I recommend that if you are considering buying one, find a friend who has one and ask to borrow it for a few weeks to see if it suits your needs. While we don't think we got "ripped off" by buying it, we wish we could have tried other brands/types first to see if they better suited our needs. And, eventually, we may own a ranch-style home so we won't have to deal with stairs. I'm sure the Kirby's power and other features would be more appreciated.Hope this helps if you're considering buying one!

Had Kirby G4 for over 20 years and did nothing to it besides changing the bags. Couple of years after I got the G4 I purchased a G5 as well just because they are so heavy I hate taking the think up and down the stairs - so I figured each floor has its own vacuum.Pros-- They last forever so even if these things are very expensive if you get 20 years of good service out of them they are worth it. There is no other vacuum out there that would go 20 years no hassle.- THESE THINGS CLEAN!! - In terms of suction power they must be number 1!Cons -- Very expensive. Must order bags from Kirby and these are quite expensive to.- Very heavy - That is a big drawback but maybe they are so heavy because they are not made of plastic so they will lasts forever.- Do nor reach well around the baseboards. Hard to handle around corners- Stupid system to change accessories. To complicated and time consuming.I got mine with all the attachments - and never used them. You need an MIT degree to be able to use all accessories.By the way they are very easy to use to inflate an air mattress for example.So my G4 broke after faithful service (and heavy use ) for 20 years. I was ready to give up owing a second Kirby and moving to a unit that is easier to use and more user-friendly. I read a few reviews (I was thinking Dyson or Miele). After I read reviews on these and looking how expensive these are I decided I will stick with Kirby.For a little extra I am upgrading my G4 to a newer model but I am Kirby fan.Hope one day they will redesign this vacuum - really redesign the attachments/accessories systemThe only reason I cannot give it a 5 is because of the accessories changing system.I am willing to admit that they are heavy because they are not made of plastic (so they have a long life) but if they would use an aluminum base material maybe these could also be made a bit lighter. That again would be a big plus.Other than that I think this still is the best vacuum out there

My mom, sister and I were visiting and two guys came to the door "just to clean our floors". Of course they told us it would only take 30 minutes. We said certainly. After 3 hours and 3 more recruitments, they sold us two vaccuums. We did manage to get them down from 2500 to 1200 a piece. They took another hour setting up the vaccuums. Boy was this a long night and they never did finish cleanning the floor. Anyways, next day buyer's remorse set in. I called to cancel and filled out the paperwork for cancelation. We have 3 days to change our mind; the laws protected us here- thank God. Anyways, of course they were upset, but he salesman did seem to treat me pretty well, a little guilt, but all in all, pretty well considering.Well, I sent in the cancelation receipt the very next day and on it, it said refund with in 10 days. They did come back within 10 days to get there vacuum cleanner, but after a month of no refund I called. I got a hold of a lady who would pass on my message and was promised a call back the next day. No call. I called 3 days later and told her my circumstance and (nicely) my dissappointment. Again, she told me she would have a manager call me back the next day. No call. Third call, same gal, I was not soo nice this time. She wouldn't give me her manager's number and I threaten to call Better Business Bureau. I got a call back two days later telling me they would credit my account. This was 45 days later from first initial cancelation. I was charged $30 for interest charges due to the credit. So it cost me $30 to listen to there spill. Hmmm. Needless to say, I will be calling BBB about the customer service and my credit card company. Credit card companies are usually better at customer service.By the way, when I vaccuum and what to use the hose for a quick crevis cleaning, I pull it off my vaccuum cleaner. Kirby you have to unhook everything and put back together creating a hassle. Make cleaning longer.Research first- No impulsive buying!!!

Kirby vacuums are by far the best available. Dyson, and other designer vacuums, only remove a small fraction of the filth that the Kirby vacuum does. The other brands do cost less, but they do not clean much. We own a Kirby and we are glad we do. If you buy one new, do not pay more that about $1250 for it. The starting price will be much higher... about $2,400. Eventually, you can talk them down to the $1,200 range. Used Kirby vacuums are a tremendous value, though. Most older owners have experienced 25+ years of reliable use with their original vacuum. Some, even longer. We vacuum at least weekly and had never experienced a brand that survived past three years, until the Kirby. But really, the other vacuums didn't do anything but provide cosmetic improvement to the surface appearance of the carpet...very little cleaning actually took place. The Kirby vacuum cleans down to the carpet pad.A plus is that the Kirby is 100% made in the good old U.S.A. It is made of metal and nylon. The nylon lasts forever, unlike typical plasics offered by other companies. It is a bit heavier than SOME vacuums, not all. That weight makes me smile. It is well made. It will last. The suction provided by this vacuum is tremendous...and it runs on much less electricity than my previous vacuums. The attachments are just bonus material. The real value is in the base unit itself. It is the only vacuum that acutally cleans the carpet. Test one out.... You will be shocked by the results. Enjoy your Kirby!

I have owned my kirby for 7 years now and it works as well today as it did the day I bought it. I had issues with the carpet cleaner attachment one time and found a simple fix by changing a filter. The suction is great and the machine is easy to use even though it is heavy because it does have a self-propelled setting. Yes it may be cumbersome to have to stop vacuuming and attach the hose, but realize that your hose probably works as AWESOME as it does because of how it attaches. It is heavy, but it is not a crappy plastic machine, it is going to LAST! I don't know that there is a machine out there that is light but will last forever, and has a hose that is more convenient to use while maintaining the power of the suction on this machine.

I am a professional housekeeper, and I've been using this vacuum for over 3 years. It is absolutely phenomenal! There is nothing like this out there, and I would recommend this to anyone who is not afraid of a little "heavy machinery" :-) Yes, the vacuum is heavy and awkward to carry if you have to drag it upstairs, but the way it cleans makes up for all that. Before, I had to first vacuum (with other vacuums)the main part of any floor and then run the hose attachment close to the wall by the baseboards to suck up any pieces that were left over. Kirby picks up EVERYTHING right in the corners, and everywhere else you need it to. Cleaning the carpet is usually much easier - it's the bare floors that are the hardest to clean. But with Kirby everything is picked up and there is no need to follow up with a hose or a broom. Definitely recommend it to anyone!!!

I bought my Kirby back in the 70's or 80's. I have had several vacuums since then but I always end up getting rid of them and using my old Kirby. I need to replace the bag and have had to replace the belt a few times but it's a great machine. It is a bit heavy but it works so much better than any other vacuum I have used.

We have used this system for over 2 years and we love it. I have read some reviews of how "complicated" it is to use the attachments. All I can say is they must be challenged in some form or another. (mentally maybe) All the attachments are easy to use, the shampoo machine works well for a homeowner type machine. It does a decent job but of course will not replace a deep seam cleaning. The machine is not heavy (sentrina) so unless you have an old machine there should not be any problems in carrying the machine if you have too. It does an amazing job of actually cleaning the carpet and we noticed a difference in our carpet and dust in general after about three weeks of use. It is not perfect but really deserves 4 of 5 stars.

over priced at 750$s, over weight, heavy going up stairs. does a mediocre job at cleaning. where does this product get its reputation as one of the best? considering the price i'll be dragging this thing around until either it dies or i do.
