First, you need to understand that there are several models for the DC23 series. As of Oct 2010, there are the Turbohead, Animal and Motorhead. The canister for all 3 models are technically the same (minus the color). The differences between the 3 models are the accessories (e.g. length of hose, tools, handle, etc) that come with each, and how each machine can be stored away. For a quick rundown of the differences, it is best to refer to dyson's online store and read the "Plus the following Accessories..." in the specifications tab. This review is specifically for DC 23 ANIMAL (obviously), but most part of the review is applicable for all 3 models.PRO:- powerful suck thru carpet- pick up animal hairs (cat) like magic- multiple intelligent designs that simplify the vacuuming job- comes with useful tools that can handle most home situations well- most parts can be cleaned easily with cold water- no non-durable parts- long power cable- not THAT noisy- good looking- very helpful customer representative from DYSONCON:- takes an unexpectedly large amount of horizontal space to store it away despite the small canister (the way it stands in the product picture is the way it is supposed to be put away)- it is a dust magnet and can be difficult to clean up due to many small parts and gaps- may need a longer bit of time than average to fully utilize the machine- very small trash holding capacity- short hose length- very expensive for a vacuum cleanerBottom line (my personal opinion):- It does the job (vacuuming) really well. However, it makes me think that the cheapest model in the DC23 series (Turbohead) may suffice my everyday needs, as there are no big difference between the two on paper.- I am a techie yet it took me an unexpectedly long time to figure out what are all those many buttons and tools for. I think they may have 'over-engineered' it in certain area.- It takes a lot of space to store it in my tiny apartment. The Motorhead of the DC23 series that uses less storage space (due to the longer hose) but it is $100 on top of the already expensive $500 pricetag. Luckily, I can improvise and make it takes up less space but detaching certain parts - but it also increases the 'setup' time needed for each use.- It's a keep.

First off I have to preface this review with the fact that my wife and I are sort of clean freaks. Nothing excessive but we vacuum our kitchen almost daily. Our first floor is mostly hard floors (wood, laminate, tile) with one room of carpeting. We have owned a Kenmore upright vacuum for about 5 years. About 1.5 years ago we were fed up with the poor performance of the Kenmore on our hard floors (it did fine on carpets) and started looking around. My wife wanted something that was small and easy to use on a daily basis. We ended up with a $50 hoover stick vacuum that she loved. I didn't like it as much but it did a great job of cleaning up the hard floors for the most part. Emptying it was another issue. Then in early November it broke, the collar that connected the head to the rest of the vacuum simply snapped in half. It was DEAD.I did some searching and looked around and ended up buying an Oreck Quest canister vacuum. I was very happy with it initially and we used it for several weeks (it's performance was better than that of the hoover). However we felt that the overall suction of the unit at the end of the hose was not up to par for the price (around 190 with bags etc) The rotational members and connector pieces of the hose had tiny air leaks that seemed to be detrimental to the suction at the vacuum head. We returned it to Oreck for a full refund (within the 30 day period). I must give Oreck compliments for their policy, it was hassle free. After a few days of searching the web and reading reviews I decided on the DC23, It was between the regular turbinehead and the animal and we ended up getting the animal. We have a medium sized dog with a fairly short coat so we thought the extra mini-turbinehead and the hard floor tool (would have had to purchase this anyway) were worth the extra cost. It's been almost a month now with the DC23 and we are still thoroughly impressed. As claimed there is no loss of suction, even when the canister appears filled with dog hair and dust it still sucks up everything we throw at it. Below I will rate the different features of the vacuum separately as to explain my 4/5 star rating. If not for a few quirks this would be a 5 start review.Maneuverability 4/5: The maneuverability of the unit is top notch. Dyson's handle design is fantastic. the articulating area where the hose meets the handle is brilliant. And the hard floor tools multi-articulating capabilities make it a dream to maneuver around obstacles. I cannot stress enough how awesome the hard floor tool is to maneuver. The only downside to the maneuverability is the actual canister itself. It is never hard to drag around, but sometimes will pop a wheelie instead of following you. Not anything I would criticize too much but just a little annoying. When it does pop a wheelie however, there is no loss of suction or problems that one might think could happen. The only other thing that could be better here is the cord could be about 5 feet longer, this would let me do my whole first floor (900) without having to change outlets. as it is now i divide the house into 2 segments.Suction 5/5: Simply amazing, really, I had my doubts after seeing commercials for Dyson vacuum's of the years. They really do pack an amazing punch in the suction department. I've filled up the vacuum several times with no loss of suction so their claims do seem to hold up.Portability 5/5: The vacuum is just the right size. it's light and easily portable. My wife has no trouble bringing it upstairs, unlike our upright where i usually get stuck lugging it up/down stairs.Accessories 5/5: The standard trio of accessories (crevice, brush and stair tool) are well designed and are very useful. The turbinehead was quite surprising. I've had several other vacuums that use suction to power a spinning brush head and they always totally stunk. Not the turbinehead, this thing is a beast and really picks up everything in the carpet. Also the mini-turbinehead performs just as well as it uses the same basic design. Finally the hard floor tool that comes with this is fantastic. It is the tool that gets the most use at our house and it shines at picking up dirt hair etc on the hard floors. Simply awesome.Storage 3/5: Here is the big miss that I feel Dyson should rectify. They provide great storage for the 3 basic tools on the unit itself. This is perfect. However with this model that still leaves 3 tools (turbinehead, mini-turbinehead and the hard floor tool) to be stored. As seen in the pictures the turbinehead (or the hard floor tool) can be "hung" on the back of the machine. This works but is slightly weak and when you pick up the unit whatever is hung there (especially the turbinehead due to it's higher weight) will fall/get knocked off easily. After that you're still left with 2 tools that have no home. Some simply mounts would suffice to fix this but they don't offer anything that I know of. This is more of an annoyance than a big detriment to the machine, but storage of a vacuum is always a tricky thing and i feel with all the other innovative and clever things that Dyson does with their machines they could address the storage problem more thoroughly.I would give this a 4.5/5 if i could. Overall we are extremely happy with this vacuum and would highly recommend it.Update:It's been about a year since we purchased this vacuum and in the meantime we've added yet another dog to our household, and boy does this one shed! Just a short 2 weeks after writing this review we added our second dog. he's a little smaller than our first but sheds about 2-3x as much fur. Thank god we spent the money and got this vacuum. Every once in a while, during yet another vacuuming of the kitchen, dog beds, living room etc., my wife praises the high quality of this vacuum. It's stood up through the first year and it appears it will continue working for many years to come. It shows no signs of slowing down. There is one disappointment that dyson needs to address. The docking section near the rear of the vacuum where you can attach the tube and handle with the head on it is pretty weak. The docking mating piece on the hard floor attachment broke after about 6 months. This is not a big deal and day to day does not affect the usability of the machine. It just goes back to my nit in the first part of the review about tool storage. They definitely missed the mark a bit on that one.Still happy though and the vacuum continues to amaze with its suctioning ability. It really doesn't ever lose suction.

I grew up using canister vacs. Some time in my late 20's, I switched to uprights. Been using uprights for years, and decided I might like to switch back to canister. Let me tell you, the Dyson canister is NOT the canister to switch to. SOOO awkward to use. I spent more time manipulating around it, adjusting cords and hoses to get out of my way... good grief. Suction was fine (I have a Dyson slim upright, and knew that I liked the Dyson product), but the Dyson canister vac didn't like my med. pile frieze. The beater brush/motor head whined... drug... gave me a real workout. On the berber and plush carpet, it was great. The hard floor attachment is the bomb!! I could manipulate under, around, behind most anything- even under dining room chairs, all the way to the center under the table in one quick movement! So, point being, the mobility of the machine is quite awkward, storage an issue (you about have to take it all apart to store it the way they suggest), and the switch to turn off the beater brush is a major pain- not user friendly at all if you go back and forth between carpet and hard floor frequently in 1 session- but the suction is great and the hard floor attachment is fantastic.I have seen a lot of reviews that mention the clogging of a Dyson- which DOES happen, but nothing that has been a major pain to clear. And I can't image a vac that never clogs anyway...

As pet owners (we have rabbits) we have to vacuum very regularly. The vacuum we were using (an Optima upright vacuum machine), which came with the apartment we are currently renting, was absolutely terrible so after conducting some research we decided it was time to go all in and decided on the Dyson DC23 Animal. It arrived after only 2 days and was very easy to assemble. It looks very nice and takes little storage space. We have two long carpets which the rabbits regularly use to sleep on which had some rabbit hairs on them. We had vacuumed these carpets two days before and we were very excited to see what the Dyson would do to them. My husband had little interest in the whole process until I started the engine and got working. The machine worked fast and the suction power was amazing! After 2 minutes the carpets looked like new (before they had always looked a bit grayish after vacuuming as all the pet hairs were never completely removed). It felt like we were in one of those vacuum commercials, all we could say was uuuuhhhhhhhh and aaaaahhhhhh and woooooooooow :)The amount of hair and dirt that the thing sucked up from our two carpets was disgusting! And the amount of fine dust the thing sucked up was also incredible! After emptying the dirt (which was very easy), we took a picture of the amount of stuff the thing had picked up... Bleeeh! It was very easy to clean out the machine after using it and it is not crazy loud, at least our bunnies were not disturbed at all by it.I never thought I would enjoy vacuuming but this thing almost makes it fun! At least it is very enjoyable to see the amount of stuff it picks up!

This Dyson DC23 Animal cylinder vacuum has, without any rival, the most powerful suction of any cleaner I've ever used. The suction is just immense, so if you keep small animal pets like gerbils or have new kittens in the house then beware, keep them well clear and locked up whilst cleaning because if this machine gets within a couple of feet of them, then up the hose they're likely to go at 200mph.The cleaner is very smart, and like most Dysons designed with intelligence and flair. Dyson has replaced the old metal wand with a new, lightweight plastic one (maybe to save cost) but it seems pretty robust and so far has worked well. The tool-fitting mechanism is excellent and very much improved from earlier Dysons; everything slots in with a satisfying `click.' On-board tool storage design is also superb and very well thought out, but unfortunately the turbo-powered rotating brush-heads are offered no onboard storage. These rotating brush attachments powered by the turbo action are however very effective in use, and a good thing too because this will likely be the main reason many buyers choose this model: to get pet hairs out of the rugs and carpets. The brushes are easy to remove and `de-hair', another useful innovation. The hard-floor brush attachment in particular is a real joy to use.A few considerations if you're thinking of buying a DC23:1. The hose is a bit short, and could do with another yard or so: this makes cleaning blinds more of a bother than it should be, as the hose with no wand attached will not reach the top of a window when the Dyson is standing on the floor2. Emptying the container is not difficult but has to be done with some care, as when the release button is pressed the spring-hinged hatch at the bottom flips down suddenly and scatters the contents downwards in a cone of dust and grit; so best to make sure when emptying you actually hold the container upright inside a large waste bin3. Storage takes up more space than it should, as it can't be stood up-ended but must sit on its wheels in the normal-use position: this might be an issue if you live in a small apartment with restricted space4. It's expensive against competitors and this, in my view, is the only consideration which knocks it back one star; but on the plus side it does come with a 5-year warranty and - boy - the sucker really sucks like nothing elseOverall, very good if you need a really powerful and effective cylinder cleaner which can get everything imaginable out of your rugs with ease, has high build quality and a 5-year warranty. If you can afford a DC23, it's a good choice; the few niggles are minor and easy to live with for the trade-off in unrivalled suction power, utilitarian practicality and classy design.

After using this vacuum for 3 months I have decided it is great. This modified brush from other brands is wonderful because one does not have to stop continously to clean off the dog hair. We have 2 dogs: vizla and a golden retriever which leaves a trail behind. This machine seems to pick up much more because of it's tremendous suction. One revuew I read said it was ackward to handle which was a worry for me. However, it is not meant to be dragged around in it's stationary position, but rather tilted back on the wheels before moved. Easy adjustment. Because I don't vacuum every day, I usually empty the canister at every room and am amazed at all the hair! I love it! Have cleaned the filter. Easy to take out, wash and replace.

I ORDERED THIS PRODUCT BECAUSE I LOVED THE DYSON DC23 THAT IS AT MY PLACE OF WORK. WHEN I SAW THAT THEY CAME UP WITH AN (ANIMAL)VERSION, I HAD TO HAVE IT. THIS VACUUM PUTS MY CENTRAL VAC TO SHAME. THE SUCTION IS AMAZING!! I HAVE TO HOLD DOWN THE THROW CARPETS SO IT WONT PICK THEM UP!! IT COULDN'T BE ANY SIMPLER TO EMPTY THE CANISTER. ALL ATTACHMENTS ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE. I'M OVER 50 AND PACK IT UP AND DOWN MY STAIRS EASILY. THE ONLY WAY THEY COULD MAKE THIS BETTER WOULD BE TO PUT THE ON AND OFF SWITCH AT YOUR FINGERTIPS (ON THE WAND)!! I LOVE THIS VACUUM CLEANER!! DID I MENTION THAT I HAVE 2 BIG DOGS AND 2 CATS AND ON WEEKENDS I HAVE 4 DOGS!! PET HAIR PICK-UP IS IMPRESSIVE!!

I'm cheating....because I needed this immediately I went to Best Buy and got one "open box" which saved me $100. Everyone has their pet peeves, as evidenced by previous reviews. But, I find this very easy to use, very effective in doing the job and relatively well made. What sold me however, after running our Hoover back and forth to the service store three times in 18 months, is the 5 year parts and LABOR warranty. Sorry, but you cannot beat that, period. Complaints about being poorly made and too much plastic?! Sorry, polycarbonate is strong stuff, and reduces weight. Our Hoover has a lot of metal, weighs a ton, hard to move around (especially on stairs) and has a lot of electrical connections/switches. An expensive nightmare on two wheels! Dyson's use of vacuum and air flow to run the entire system is great...fewer parts to break and highly effective. I had to use it upon purchase, and it sucked up so much dog hair I was shocked. I couldn't even see the hair in the house expect on the dark hardwood, but I had to empty it twice cleaning a townhouse. Too much effort???? Apparently, for some review writers, but the design couldn't make emptying it any easier (DO empty outside though, the fine dust will whirl up). Bottom line, expensive .... yes, but the five year warranty is worth the piece of mind. Too complicated to operate or put together? If it is, you shouldn't be driving a car.

I debated long and hard and looked around in stores to get a hands-on sense of quality in cyclone-type canister vacuums. I was really tempted to go with a Hoover because they were so much less expensive. BUT - I'm 68 and while I'm still working full-time, I wanted to buy my last-ever vacuum and get one that would serve me really well and be a pleasure to use. I'm so tired of poorly-made junk that frustrates the heck out of me and makes cleaning much harder that it needs to be. I walked away from the Hoovers in the store because I wasn't convinced they were what I wanted and on my way out, I found myself standing in front of a display of Dyson fans. Those things amaaaaze me! I played with them for awhile and thought to myself: "That's the level of engineering you'd be getting with the Dyson vacuum." I searched online a few days later, read a bunch of reviews, and found the DC23 Animal canister listed through Amazon, but from another site (ABC Vacuums) at a good price and ordered it. Service was excellent and it came quickly. I opened it up, plugged in the hose and carpet attachment and went to town. I live with my daughter's family; 2 kids and 3 cats (2 of them long-haired), so there was plenty to test it out on. The attachments go on very easily, click into place beautifully and come off just as easily WHEN you want them to. No lousy pressure-fit that falls apart repeatedly throughout the job! The latches work wonderfully for hose and attachments. The rug attachment is extremely well articulated and maneuvers AND EDGE CLEANS unbelievably well. It did a very credible job; removing all that pet hair very easily and effortlessly. The bare floor attachment is an absolute marvel! I took it downstairs where we're building an apartment for me and used it in and around the masses of extension cords, dust collection hoses, stored materials and clutter and debris - and cardboard all over the floor that we use to help protect the finished flooring 'till the job is done. To say I've just never seen anything like this floor attachment is such an understatement! It went in and around, over under and through all that mess and picked out the sawdust and grime and just sucked it all away; and using the little loop suction control in the D-handle on the wand, I was able even, to clean off plastic drop cloths without sucking them into the tubing. I use this vacuum down there all the time now to keep the work site clean. (We're past the drywall stage of the job - I would never use it or anything other than a shop vac. on drywall dust!) My Dyson has turned what was an exhausting chore for me into a pleasurable, easy thing to do. It (bare floor attachment) is designed so phenomenally well that it will easily turn until it is actually running parallel with the wand and can be pushed into spaces only about 2" wide to pick up dust and debris. It's so smooth and easy to work with that I marvel at it the whole time I'm cleaning. The attachments are also very low and go under many things no other vacuum I've used would clear. One person who reviewed this machine said it tipped over easily. NO WAY!! I've tried to tip this thing over! I had to deliberately tip it down to a 30 degree angle between the downside wheel and the floor before it would go the rest of the way down. Tipping it any less and then letting it go merely resulted in it's dropping back down onto both wheels. It has NEVER tipped up during use - not one bit! It hugged even bare hardwood stairs, staying put beautifully as I cleaned higher up. The hand-held mini-turbinehead is a very useful little tool. I use it on my bedspread (utilizing the suction control) to remove cat hair several times a week. It's wonderful for upholstery and carpeted stairs as well. The cord is nearly 23 feet long and retracts smoothly and flawlessly every time. I had wanted the stowaway feature, but wanted a longer cord and the Mini Turbinehead, so I put a Velcro loop strap on the hose about 2 feet out from the plastic bracket in the front of the vacuum so that I can strap the two coils of hose together in the back when they're wrapped around the machine for storage. The D-handle on the wand also drops over the top of the floor attachment when it's stored on its bracket and that helps hold it all together for storage as well. NO problem! The canister removes very easily to be emptied, which I do with each use. I just wrap a plastic grocery bag around at the bottom of the canister and hold it snugly while I press the button to release the bottom flap and close it again before I remove the bag. Clean, quick and easy! The canister drops almost automatically and without any hassle right back into place on the body of the vacuum after emptying. SO SWEET! This part works better and more easily than my daughter's Dyson Ball (which she loves!). My son has the Stowaway and is very happy with it as well. I threw my old Oreck in the dumpster after borrowing my son's Stowaway!I've used uprights and canisters of all makes and persuasions - Kenmore, Hoover, Kirby, Oreck, Eureka, and on - I've been cleaning house since I was 6 and this beautiful little vacuum is light years ahead of all the rest! Worth every penny!

I have owned a Dyson for almost 2 years. Within the first 6 months the plastic tubing to the powerhead split. I phoned Dyson and they were extremely nice and sent a replacement immediately. Then a couple of months after that I noticed fluff on the carpet wasn't being picked up and the powerhead was difficult to push. I flipped the powerhead over and noticed all of the bristles on the spinning brush were shaved off. I phoned them again and they were very accomadating in sending me a replacement brush and a little lecture on ensuring I turn the powerhead off when vacuuming hardwood floors. I don't use the powerhead on the hardwood, I always use the brush attachment as it is gentler on the floor. Now I have just sent the WHOLE vacuum in to be repaired because the prongs on the plug are loose and the vacuum will not start AND the powerhead was turning off intermittently when in use.I found it difficult to be angry at a company whose customer service was so good, but now I have totally had it!! The ONLY good thing about Dyson is their customer service. I bought into the no bag thing, which is really gross as the dust flies everywhere when emptying the canister, and the cyclone technology advertisements. It is a cheaply built, magnificently marketed piece of crap! Don't buy it!
